Dominating it is the immense 17th-century castle of Emperor Fasilides, which combines Portuguese, Indian and local architectural styles. Often referred to as the 'Camelot of Africa', Gonder has made the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the evening, you will have dinner at the notable 4 Sisters Restaurant.
Day 8 | Lalibela
- Monday, April 7, 2025
- Churches of Lalibela
- After a short flight departing from Gondar, we will arrive in Lalibela. This small town holds 11 churches each carved from a single block of granite, that we will see over the course of 2 days. Most of the churches are beautifully designed with fragile-looking windows of different sizes, various forms of crosses, and catchy wall paintings. The churches are connected to each other by tunnels and walkways. The most famous being Bete Giyorgis, often referred to as the face of Lalibela. You will also experience a traditional coffee ceremony. This beautiful and unique ceremony is a tradition in Ethiopia which takes time to celebrate friendship, hospitality, and respect. This ritual involves scattering the ground or floor with freshly cut grass and burning incense sticks to ward off evil spirits. The beans are then roasted on a charcoal burner, and manually ground before finally the coffee is brewed in a long-necked clay pot called a jebena. It's an elaborate process, but we think you'll agree that traditionally brewed Ethiopian coffee is truly delicious.
